What is a Gantt chart?

A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart that visualizes a project schedule. Each task is a bar positioned along a timeline: the left edge is the start date, the length is the duration, and overlapping bars show which work happens in parallel. Project managers have used Gantt charts for over a century because they answer the three questions every stakeholder asks: what happens when, in what order, and are we on track.

This generator is built for practitioners — contractors, planners, and teams who need a usable schedule in minutes, not a week-long trial of enterprise project software.

How to make a Gantt chart online

  1. Add your tasks — click “Add task” and type a name. Keep names short and verb-first (“Pour foundation”, not “The foundation will be poured”).
  2. Set start dates and durations — enter a start date for each task and its duration in calendar days. The chart redraws instantly.
  3. Adjust progress — drag the progress slider to reflect completion. The filled part of each bar shows how far along the task is.
  4. Export — click “Export PNG” to download a clean image you can drop into a proposal, report, or slide deck.

Your work autosaves to this browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Gantt chart generator really free?

Yes. Every feature on this page — unlimited tasks, progress tracking, and PNG export — is free with no signup. We may add optional paid power features later, but the core tool stays free.

Do you store my project data?

No. Your tasks are saved only in your own browser’s local storage. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Clearing your browser data clears the chart.

Can I export to Excel or PDF?

PNG export is available today. Excel and PDF export are on the roadmap — the PNG works well for pasting into documents and slides.

How is duration calculated?

Durations are calendar days, matching standard contract language. A 5-day task starting Monday covers Monday through Friday; a task spanning a weekend includes the weekend in its bar length.

Can I set dependencies between tasks?

Dependency arrows are in development. For now, order tasks by start date to show sequence clearly — most simple schedules read fine this way.

Why another Gantt tool?

Most online Gantt makers want a signup, a workspace, and a credit card before you can draw a single bar. GanttKit does one thing: open the page, type your tasks, get a chart. If you need a quick schedule for a proposal, a bid, or a team sync, that’s the whole workflow.
